Authentic Signed “New Moons” Antique Landscape Painting by Frank Russell Green
By Frank Russell Green
Located in Shippensburg, PA
A lovely personalized painting by Frank Russell Green depicting the crescent of a New Moon becoming visible in the dusk during golden hour, it is executed in oil on an artists’ cardstock and is matted with a heavy linen paper with lines framing the opening; this is inscribed by the artist: ”Dear Ralph, ‘A Merry Christmas’ and may the New Moons in 1923 bring you my best wishes, Frank Russell Green.” The vibrant colors are brilliantly contrasted against the deepening shadows as day turns to night. Frank Russell Green preferred to paint during the “still of noon” and the golden hues of dusk, almost always open air with his easel set up in field. In this scene, he overlooks a small body of water before a town in the distance, barely discernible but for the spires that peek over the horizon into the burning fire of the sky. It is housed in a new frame. Frank Russell Green was born in Chicago, Illinois on April 16th of 1856 to Russell and Caroline Green. Despite receiving no encouragement from his father, he showed an early talent for the brush and in 1873 he left Chicago to paint the Rocky Mountains with several young painters and Henry Elkins (American, 1847-1884). This trip would heavily influence his passion for landscapes, which he primarily began painting in the Hudson River School taste, and also would shape his preference for plein-air painting. Much of his early work is characterized by its tonal qualities and shares elements of the Hudson River School, the Old Lyme School...

Walter Nettleton (American, 1861-1936) Antique Oil Painting of a Peasant Woman
By Walter Nettleton
Located in Shippensburg, PA
This is a fine painting by Walter Eben Nettleton capturing a peasant girl looking over the fields of wheat at the end of the day. There is a tonalism quality to the work that allows each layer of the background to slowly meld into the next; there is a complexity to the colors that is not evident upon first glance and only slowly unwraps. The wheat field in the distance is notable in the way the stalks catch the light as it reflects through the head of the grain as the young woman looks on with a certain weariness of expression. It remains in original unrestored condition with a certain yellowing of the varnish that can be conserved upon request (though this process can take in excess of six months depending on our conservator’s schedule). Born in New Haven, Connecticut in 1861, Walter Eben Nettleton studied at Yale University, graduating in 1883. The Yale University Art Gallery holds one of his paintings in their permanent collection, a study of a young peasant woman knitting in a green pasture (acc. no. 1908.1). He studied under Lefebvre, Boulanger, Carolus Duran and Alexander Harrison...
