About the Item

Signed, dated and localized on the corner. José Franco Cordero (Jerez de la Frontera (Cádiz), 1851 – Madrid, circa 1910) began his artistic training in Seville, at the School of Fine Arts of Santa Isabel in Hungary, and later moved to Madrid, where he expanded his studies in San Fernando. He was a disciple of José Jiménez Aranda, and specialized in the painting of customs and in the landscape genre. He attended the National Exhibition of Fine Arts of 1878 with "Landscape", the 1881 with "The afternoon" and the 1892 with another "Landscape", this last work that earned him third medal. José Franco Cordero is currently represented at the Museo del Prado. In this canvas the author offers us a naturalistic landscape, inheritor of the teachings of Carlos de Haes, dominated by a calm atmosphere, a serenity that derives from the composition based on the successive horizontals that build the landscape, barely interrupted by vertical elements . Haes considered landscape as a genre of understanding, being difficult to deal with and to understand. He argued that the end of art is the truth found in the faithful imitation of nature, for which the painter must know deeply the natural and not be carried away by the imagination. That is why he preferred to finish the works in the workshop, to capture the concrete moment, since nature itself is constantly changing. The artistic genius would lie not only in the technique, but also in the personal way of contemplating nature. Thus, here Franco Cordero presents us with a landscape stripped of all artifice, without scenographic or ideal elements, just as it is, seen through his eyes and his heart, reflecting his own feeling before the landscape. We see, in fact, a contained chromatism, which revolves around earthy and green tones, although it is enlivened by brilliant touches that enhance the subtle play of lights that the painter has managed to capture. In fact, the atmosphere and luminosity play a great role in the composition, giving the space air, volume, life. Thus, the vagaries of natural light are visible not only in the resounding volumes of the houses with whitewashed walls, but also in the vegetation, subtly worked in such a way as to gradually strengthen the depth of the space. Also the color helps in this sense; in the first term, the riverbank closest to us, dominate intense, dark and cold greens, which contrast smoothly with the warmer tones of the riverbed, worked in earthy colors. On the opposite shore we see luminous ocher, red and green tinted, and beyond the bright white and reddish houses. Finally, the space closes in a strip of vegetation blurred by the effect of distance, in more uniform warm tones, which distinguish the horizon with clarity. Above it, there is a wide cloudscape, which occupies something less than half the picture, with large clouds worked with a slight, subtle brushwork, based on white, green and red tones that seem to reflect those of the earth.
