About the Item

Wonderful triptych of oil on canvas representing still lifes by Gaston Noury. The wooden frames have been entirely gilded and the paintings cleaned and restored by our craftsmen, in the knowledge and respect of artisanal techniques. Period: Art Deco Circa: 1935 Measures of the two still lifes Dahlias: Height: 63cm x Width: 73cm Measures still life Eyelets: Height: 69cm x Width: 55cm Signed lower right Advertising and costume design at the beginning of the 20th century , for entertainment centers such as the Moulin Rouge and the Ambassadeurs in the Montmartre district of Paris, was a great way to earn a fortune. Although it only happened to a few, one of them was a young Norman artist by the name of Gaston Noury. Gaston learned the art of drawing from a master, his grandfather who was the director and curator of the local art museum. Among the frequent visitors to Maison Noury are named artists: Pissaro, Renoir, Monet and Degas. At the age of 23, he moved to Paris and settled in the shadow of the newly erected Basilica of the Sacred Heart. In the space of 12 to 15 years, the artist saw his fortune grow, but his dissatisfaction with trivial projects led him to want to go beyond costumes and art posters. His decision to switch to advertising and publishing led him to a more serious job and he quickly found some happiness in book illustration. He also gained notoriety in the field of fashion design through the exposure of his work in magazines and internal publications. In October 1918, his wife was swept away by the Spanish flu, deeply affected, he returned to Le Havre and then settled in Saint-Adresse, not far from Sarah Bernhardt's house. He devotes himself entirely to his art and practices oil painting, gouache, watercolor but also pastel. Refusing to remarry, he brings up his three children on his own. During his last years, he experienced misery: unable to always buy canvases, he also painted on plywood. His latest productions are still lifes of different flowers, his state of health no longer allowing him to move. Possibility of selling by the unit: 1350€ per piece

Very nice lot of two oils on panel, representing two still lifes. The realism is absolutely remarkable. The first alone represents the elegance and freshness of the Hostess. A magnificent white ceramic bowl sculpted with small harmonious ruffles, composed of red fruits and pears placed on a table where a small garden butterfly still cleverly blends into the decor. The second offers us all the robustness and generosity of the master of the house...

  • Flower Still Life with Dahlias, Oil on Canvas, Gaston Geleyn, Dated 1934
    Located in Casteren, Noord-Brabant
Flower still life with dahlias, in beautiful, vibrant colors. Oil on canvas. The round format is very unusual. Frame and canvas are an original whole. The painting is signed in the paint on the lower right and dated, 1934. The painting is framed behind anti-reflective glass, which means that the colors are beautifully preserved. The frame is subtly carved in Art Deco style. A similar painting by the same painter is depicted in an old exhibition book by this painter. See picture. His work work has also been purchased by various museums. The book about Gaston Geleyn is beautifully illustrated, 170 pages and it is about the life and work of the artist. The book was published in 1933. Book is supplied with the painting. More information about the Gaston Geleyn follows below. Source: Paul Piron 'Art in Belgium'.
