We attempt to portray any imperfections. Circa, Late 20th Century. There are days it takes a Village… Am I right?? Well, folks… we may just have EXACTLY what you need!!!! Layers and Layers of LOVLINESS in this Village!!! This is a FABULOUS layered lacquer painting composed with gilt & polychrome on wood titled “Village Scene” signed by Vietnamese Master Lacquer Artist Nguyen Van Minh and it also bears his logo on the back of the painting. It features a traditional Vietnamese village scene with adults and children going about their day in the simple life within their community. The setting features two people, deep in conversation (WHAT ARE THEY TALKING ABOUT!?!? I know… I’m pretty nosey!!) I bet the one guy wants to know where the other guy got that awesome blue coat!! That’s my guess!! LOL… Meanwhile, another man sits nearby under a mature, blooming tree awaiting a customer that may need a good foot wash, heel scrub, or pedicure. Sounds good to me!! It looks like it may be a warm dry day, sand or dirt fills the ground space… no grass in the courtyard, but there are some leaves blowing about. And, if you take a glance down to the lower left corner… a sweet lady appears to be offering a cold drink to a child playing outside her fenced yard. The child’s mother stands nearby… a baby perched upon her hip gazing with awe at the foot washing station… probably LONGING to sit down for that pedicure!! I hear ya lady!! Behind the patrons sits a small house or building with a ruby red roof and a peek of brick showing through the cracked outer stone wall and a wonderful line of tall, towering trees fades off in the distance. How serene!!! This painting was masterfully created over time with precise techniques involving layers & layers of lacquer, intricate hand painting, fading, gilt, & polychrome on a wonderful wood canvas. It exhibits fantastic colors of brown, gold, green, blue, black & red & it’s about 24H x 16W. It is going to be marvelous on ANY wall waiting for an incredible example of Vietnamese artistry & a unique conversation piece. Nguyen Van Minh was born in Saigon, South Vietnam in 1934. He graduated with honors from the National School of Superior Fine Arts in Saigon in 1958, founded the Me Linh Lacquer workshop in Saigon, and further honed his lacquer techniques in Kyoto & Sendai, Japan between the years 1961 & 1962. He was awarded and recognized for multiple works over his career. In 1962 he was awarded the Honor Medal by the Vatican for his portrait of Pope Paul VI, and he was a Silver Medal recipient from The International Fine Arts Exhibition in Rome, Italy in 1963. And he was recognized for creating monumental lacquer paintings for the Vietnamese Presidential Palace in 1967 before immigrating to the United States in 1975, where he would become an international success. He was a well-known Master Lacquer Artist often referred to as “The Prince of Lacquer” and celebrated for his mastery of echoing scenes of Vietnamese History, traditional village settings & daily life, landscapes, figures, & animals. His works could take six months to a year to complete, reflecting the time-intensive nature, expense, and technique intricacy of his painting, fading & lacquer layering process. His works continue to be very sought after with significant sale prices ranging from hundreds to tens of thousands of dollars. Nguyen Van Minh passed away January 6th, 2014. Beautiful condition, keeping in mind that these are vintage and not new so will have signs of use and wear even if it has been refinished or restored. Specifically, each plaque background has had a fresh coat of black paint however, they still have nicks, dings, and chiggers appropriate with age. We added new hangers, and the bronze figures retain their original patinated finish. Please see photos, zoom in for details, and see long description as they are part of the condition report. We attempt to portray any imperfections. Circa, Mid-20th Century. If you are a lover of arts and culture, we have the perfect plaques for you!! We have four marvelous cast bronze Asian figures articulating extraordinary expressions of what we believe to be visual arts, culinary arts, musical arts, and performance arts. Each cast bronze figure is mounted upon a rectangular freshly painted black plywood base plaque, each bearing differing patina or signs appropriate with age such as nicks or dings that we feel only enhance the beauty of their presence. As a matter of fact, this particular set of four was among my mother’s personal collection for many years, so it holds a special place in my heart for sure!! In our research we discovered that Gansu is a province in north-central China. Its city Jiayuguan is best known for the magnificent Great Wall. Awesome!! Each cast bronze figure exudes their own form of art, celebrating life and all of the beauty that comes with it. One holds a serving tray with a couple of glasses and a carafe… in my world there is probably a delicious red wine inside that carafe just waiting to pass through my lips!! Whatever it may be, it must be something lovely, delicious, and a bit mysterious! Another figure embraces an incredible sculpture that drapes from the tip of her shoulder, under her arm, and secretly swoops behind her. Behold… a vision of loveliness left to your imagination … a puzzling and optically pleasing piece of artistry. While another figure proudly plays a flute, twinkling their fingers across the keys… filling the air with joyful notes & sounds that tickle your ears… But let’s not leave out the last figure dancing blissfully to the beat… skipping and shuffling her bare feet in the sand. And did you notice everyone is dressed to the T’s!! Gorgeous cloaks, gowns, Hanfu, headdresses, obis, wraps, and jewels!! What a PARTY...
