"Walking the Cows" Important Social Realist Painting by Sternberg, 1944

About the Item

A cross between Grant Wood and Paul Cadmus, this remarkable American regional scene painting depicts a young man in a white t-shirt walking a group of cows down a country lane with picturesque clusters of farm buildings in the distance. Painted in 1944, the sunny, optimistic scene gives no hint of the Second World War that was in progress thousands of miles away. The painter was Charlotte Joan Sternberg, who helped resurrect the wide use of egg tempera paint among artists in the 1940s, this work being an early and important example. Later, she did a number of paintings for J. Walter Thompson, a major advertising firm in New York. This painting, although executed when she was only 24 years old, shows a sure hand and an appreciation for classic American scenes. This is one of the finest paintings we have seen with this subject matter from the 1940s. (Dimensions include frame).
