Watercolor of Three Ships, 1905, Signed Edward John Russell, (American, 1832-1906) Naval Battle Scene This 19th-century watercolor painting depicts a dramatic naval scene with three sailing ships engaged in battle. The watercolor is after an engraving by George Coggeshall called the "Battle of the Dolphin with British Ship Hebe and Three Brothers", signed and dated in lower right corner "Ewd. J. Russell 1905." The central ship, identified as "Bon Homme Richard," flies an American flag, while the other vessels appear to be British. The artist's attention to detail is evident in the rigging, sails, and the dynamic movement of the ships on the waves. The painting is framed in a simple, dark wood frame that complements the artwork's historical nature. The style aligns with maritime art popular in the 19th century. Edward Russell (1816-1906) was a prominent American maritime artist known for his detailed and accurate depictions of ships and naval battles.
