About the Item

This is a gorgeous antique oil landscape painting on canvas of cattle at a highland lake, a bright and cheery work with a beautiful mountainous view over the cold blue loch. It is identified on the frame as a depiction of "Loch Achray", a well known body of water between Loch Katrine and Loch Venachar in the heart of the Trossachs, Scotland. The work is highly detailed, an exceptional piece when you review other works signed by Langley offered on the market over the last decade. An excerpt from " Hidden Talents: A Dictionary of Neglected Artists Working 1880-1950 " (Jeremy Wood, England) notes in reference to Langley: 'Painter in oil of rural landscapes and coastal scenes who was working in the early 1900s. The subjects of this prolific artist included views in Cornwall, the South of England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland. Among the titles of known works are 'On the Lledr', 'Wee Bridge, Killarney', 'In the Glen', and 'Sunshine after Rain, a Village in the Thames'. The work shows a distinct simarity to that of several artists working at the time and the signature could possibly be a pseudonym. The pictures are often large and decorative and have become increasingly popular in recent years.' This is a simply outstanding work, preserved very carefully under glass and left untouched. It is a wonderful find for any collector of pastoral scenes or of Scottish landscapes. Oil protected under glass. Examined with a blacklight and it appears to be free of inpainting or repairs. Some stretcher marks on right and left sides as well as light craquelure throughout. Frame is heavily oxidized, the gilded gesso now a dark beige in color - frame is chipped with numerous gesso repairs. Absolutely gorgeous.
