This original vintage poster for La Chablisienne- Burgundy wines dating from 1926 by Henry Le Monnier. This poster shows Chablis (the most northern wine district of Burgundy) as the epicenter of the globe. A red-haired woman in a Roman gown dominates this globe and proudly brandishes a bottle of Chablis, to announce to the world the birth of the cooperative: La Chablisienne. The artist plays on different shades of blue and red, certainly to symbolize the colors of Chablis's coat of arms, which the woman wears on her breast. Clusters of grapes also adorn the poster. More about Henry Le Monnier Born in Paris on March 7, 1893, Henry Le Monnier studied at the Ecole Pilon and at the Ecole des Arts Décoratifs (Decorative Arts School in Paris), before starting to publish illustrations in 1920 in Fantasia. In 1923 he became a poster artist, first for Lutecia (1923-32), then Joseph Charles (1934-43) and Gaillard (1934-54) where he designed posters for various brands such as: • Armagnac Château Larressingle • Blédine, the famous brand of baby foods • Cavia, the condiment for gourmets • La Chablisienne Chablis wines - this poster • Englebert tires • Georges Bisson cheeses in Livarot • Jean Lescure butters • Lesieur Oils • Lyonnais hams and sausages • Maximo vermouth • Union Laitière des Fermiers d’Isigny • Le Vieux Normand camembert produced by the widow Maurice Rendu in Rocques in Calvados while continuing to publish illustrations in various magazines such as Le Sourire, Le Journalamus, l'Œuvre and Marianne. In the 1950’s and 1960’s, Henry Le Monnier took to illustrating comic books such as the French edition of Tarzan, Pierrot and many others. Henry Le Monnier died in 1978 at the age of 85.
