About the Item

Our Blanc de la Mer Glaciale  Tres remarquable par sa tete allongee, et sa blancher….  Dimensions: Height: 10.83 in (27.5 cm) Width: 14.57 in (37 cm) Extremely rare.   Issued in the series:   Histoire naturelle. Ensemble de 41 planches dessinées par Guerin et Lith. en couleurs par E.F. Noel.   Published by Noel aîné, Paris, 1827.   Because the work was never formally completed no title-page nor accompanying letterpress for the series was produced, though the title 'Collection d'Animaux' appears in the publisher's 1827 catalogue of plates available for individual purchase (at a franc each, or 75 centimes uncoloured). The images were produced by Paul-Louis Oudart and P. Guerin, both noted as "dessinateurs-naturalistes" at the Jardin du Roi (the Jardin des Plantes, that is, going through one of its periodic name changes, on this occasion because of the Bourbon restoration).   Oudart (1796-1860) was the well-connected natural history artist who worked on the scientific plates for several grands voyages accounts, beginning with that of Freycinet in the mid-1820s.

Located in Norwich, GB
Johann Jakob Scheuchzer (1672-1733); engraved by P.A. Kilian. Bible engraving, Noah’s Ark Folio. Dimensions: 38 x 24 cm. Hand coloured This fascinating folio engraving is from Johann Jakob Scheuchzer’s Physica Sacra. The work was published in Augsburg und Ulm between 1731 and 1735. Each engraving features highly decorative borders which feature biblical and scientific depictions. Physica Sacra combined theological and scientific practices in an attempt to reconcile biblical passages with the new sciences of the time. The work is an extraordinary illustrated natural history work, and a great example of the decorative nature of the 18th century copper engraving. Scheuchzer was a founder of paleobotany and European paleontology, as well as a professor of mathematics and physics. He believed the Old Testament was a factual account of the history of the world...

19th-Century Detailed Hand-Coloured Lithograph of a Large Medieval Siege Tower
Located in Langweer, NL
19th-Century Hand-Coloured Lithograph of a Large Medieval Siege Tower with Details Description: This finely executed hand-coloured lithograph presents a massive 'medieval siege tower', complete with structural details and mechanisms used during large-scale sieges. Taken from the 1842 publication 'Der Rittersaal: Eine Geschichte des Ritterthums', this work by Friedrich Martin von Reibisch and Dr. Franz Kottenkamp highlights the engineering ingenuity of siege warfare during the Middle Ages. The central focus of the illustration is the monumental siege tower, meticulously depicted with wooden reinforcements, a sloped base, and numerous small windows for archers and infantry. Wheels at the foundation highlight the mobility of this immense structure, while a wooden floor plan in the top right corner provides an aerial view of its grid-based layout. Additionally, the inset diagrams on the left showcase key mechanical components, including pulley systems and structural beams used to assemble or operate the tower effectively. In the foreground, two smaller siege devices are displayed, likely for additional artillery or defensive support. The rolling landscape, complete with castles and distant hills, adds a scenic backdrop that complements the detailed technical rendering. Condition: This lithograph remains in very good condition, with well-preserved hand-colouring and sharp, clear lines. Minor age-toning and light foxing add to the print’s antique charm without diminishing its visual impact. Ideal for collectors of military history, medieval warfare, or engineering art...
