Edward Algernon Stuart Douglas (1848- 1918) was a British painter in both oil and watercolour of sporting images. Douglas is said to have worked in conjunction with Ackermanns for many years, who in 1887 published a set of four coursing scenes by Douglas which were engraved by C.R. Stock.
He was educated (1861) at Charterhouse School, near Godalming in Surrey, United Kingdom.
Little is known of the life of this very competent sporting painter. Between 1880 and 1892 he exhibited ten works at the Royal Academy, all of which were hunting scenes and which were sent from an address in Barnes, London, where he is thought to have lived.
Douglas frequently produced pictures in pairs or sets of four; a pair of his hunting scenes was engraved by Edward Gilbert Hester. He sometimes worked in miniature and his larger compositions have the detailed and delicate finish of his miniature work.
He also painted portraits of horses, dogs and group portraits, such as ‘Lord Portman’s Hounds; The East Dorset’ which was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1890.
In addition to those illustrated above, titles by the artist include ‘After a Long Run’ 1883, ‘The Huntsman’s Favourites’ 1884 and ‘Lord Portman’s Hounds’ 1890.
He died in September 1918, aged 69, in Dorking.
Condition: Some minor professional repairs to the burlwood frame but not noticeable. Some darkening to the original matting and to a lesser extent to the print, through natural age.

Located in Dallas, TX
Presenting a lovely 19C Aquatint Engraving of the Quay at Waterford in Waterford city in Ireland.
This engraving has been hand embellished with aquatint color(s) and is from Ireland circa 1820-40.
It features a scene of the Quay or Port of Waterford from circa 1820. We are basing this upon the attire of the figures in the engraving and the tall ships.
It features Reginald’s Tower (still located at the Waterford Quay to this day). Georgian Quay buildings, a number of moored tall ships and row boats, barrels, horses and carts, women and British soldiers.
The engraving was professionally reframed and matted in Dallas in the 1980’s and the rear of the frame says that it was “Museum Mounted and Matted”. The frame has a lovely Grecian pattern around the front.

19th Century Irish Country Squires Mahogany Hunt Table
Located in Dallas, TX
Presenting a gorgeous 19th century Irish country squires mahogany Hunt table.
This table was made in the late 19th century circa 1880, and is made of solid mahogany and sits on 8 legs with padded hoof feet.
2 drop leafs on either side supported by swinging gate legs on either side when upwards.
Beautiful interlocking detail to the side leafs and central section.
Oval in shape …. it would comfortably seat 8 people.
Made in Ireland.
This is a ‘Hunt’ table and not to be confused with an Irish ‘Wake’ table.
Whilst ‘Hunt Tables’ and ‘Wake Tables’ are similar in shape and design their original purposes could not be more different.
Wake Tables were made and used by indigenous Irish people for 2 purposes: (1) As a full functional dining table and (2) the central section had to be of sufficient width and length to support a coffin for the purpose of ‘waking’ the deceased in their home. Wake Tables were almost always made of oak, as this was the most common wood found in Ireland and therefore available to the ordinary (and poor) Irish Folk. Sometimes they might also be made of elm or sycamore.
Hunt Tables. however, we not made for the purposes of holding a coffin or ‘waking’ the dead. They were made for the ruling classes, nobility or gentry for the sole purpose of use on the day of the ‘hunt’. This would be the fox hunting season of Fall and Winter, where the participants in the ‘hunt’ would gather at the local manor house early in the morning and the snacks and refreshments would be displayed for eating and drinking on the ‘hunt’ table. Hunt Tables are almost always made of mahogany which was an expensive and exotic hardwood imported from Cuba and the West Indies. When not in use they would be put up against a wall with the leafs down and items would be displayed on top.
This table is obviously a ‘hunt’ table because: (1) It is made of mahogany (2) the central section is not wide enough to safely hold at coffin at rest.
We are of the firm opinion that this is in fact an Irish-made Hunt Table due top the legs and padded hoof feet which more closely resemble the feet one would find on an Irish Wake Table...
