About the Item
Andy Warhol "Cow" lithograph laid on linen in blue and orange. From Andy Warhol's Cow series, which featured various color combinations of cow profiles silkscreened atop wallpaper. The series was first shown in a yellow and pink color palette in 1966 for a show of Warhol's at the Leo Castelli Gallery in New York City. Warhol would continue to experiment with various color combinations from that show through the 1980s. This poster was printed by The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts in 1992 as part of their fundraising efforts.
The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts was formed in 1987 at the behest of Warhol's will. Its purpose is to both protect the legacy of the artist, educate the public about his work, as well as raise funds for its highly acclaimed grant programs. The Foundation awards about $15 million in grants annually to emerging visual artists.
Andy Warhol was an American artist, film director and producer. Warhol was a leading figure in the Pop Art movement, where he tackled the integration of art, celebrity and consumerist culture in his works. Before becoming the art icon he is known as today, Warhol was a commercial illustrator. After moving from Pittsburgh to New York in 1949, Warhol designed store window displays and created ads for luxury brands such as Chanel and Lighthouse Footwear.
This is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction. This poster is conservation mounted, linen backed and in very good vintage condition.

(after) Andy Warhol
Since 1960 American artist Andy Warhol (1928-1987) has been considered one of the most well known and controversial artists in American Pop Art, having becoming synonymous with Pop Art itself. His works explore the relationship between artistic expression, celebrity culture, and advertising that flourished by the 1960s, and span a variety of media, including painting, silkscreening, photography, film and sculpture. Warhol used common images of popular media that were executed with hardline realism, and were considered new and outrageous. Andy Warhol is considered to be the #1 top performing artists on the art market today, comprising a sizable chunk of the contemporary art market. Born and raised in Pittsburgh, Warhol initially pursued a successful career as a commercial illustrator. After exhibiting his work in several galleries in the late 1950s, he began to receive recognition as an influential and controversial artist. His New York studio, The Factory, became a well-known gathering place that brought together distinguished intellectuals, drag queens, playwrights, Bohemian street people, Hollywood celebrities, and wealthy patrons. He promoted a collection of personalities known as Warhol Superstars, and is credited with coining the widely used expression "15 minutes of fame."
