Antique 1828 Satirical Print The Impotence of the Uniform Hand-Colored

About the Item

Antique 1828 Satirical Print The Impotence of the Uniform Hand-Colored This dramatic and humorous hand-colored etching, titled *The Impotence of the Uniform*, is part of Monkeyana, or Men in Miniature, published in 1828. The artist, Thomas Landseer, masterfully uses anthropomorphic monkeys to parody human nature, particularly society’s obsession with status, appearances, and authority. The scene depicts a startling moment of theatrical satire. At left, a monkey dressed in an ornate red military uniform with gold epaulettes recoils in horror, his saber limp in his lap. His expression is one of shock and helplessness. Just beyond, a second monkey lies sprawled on the ground, possibly having been bested or frightened. At right, a large looming figure, draped in a flowing white sheet like a ghost, confronts them with exaggerated drama. Despite the imposing gesture, the sheet is clearly a flimsy disguise, exposing the performative nature of intimidation and power. Beneath the image is a fitting quote from Shakespeare: 'Women, resettle shadow. Unreal mockery, hence!' — Shakespeare This reference underscores the theme of illusion and powerlessness—the ghostly figure being mere spectacle, and the uniform offering no real protection or strength. Landseer mocks the blind reverence for rank and uniform, revealing how easily appearances can be unmasked or rendered impotent. The etching is signed in the plate: *Thos Landseer* and marked as a proof. The coloring is vivid, particularly in the contrasting blue and red garments, while the expressive linework delivers both motion and emotion. Condition: Good condition overall. The paper shows some age-related toning and foxing, especially visible in the upper right quadrant. Margins are intact, and the image remains bold and engaging. No tears or repairs noted. Artist: Thomas Landseer Date: 1828 Medium: Hand-colored etching From: Monkeyana, or Men in Miniature An outstanding example of 19th-century satirical art.
