Antique Handcolored Print of a Reformed Redeemer in Ceremonial Robes, 1862

About the Item

Antique Handcolored Print of a Reformed Redeemer in Ceremonial Robes, 1862 This original handcolored lithograph depicts a Reformed Redeemer, part of a religious order known for their charitable work and dedication to redeeming captives during the medieval and early modern periods. The figure is shown in a modest cream robe and a dark cloak adorned with red crosses, a symbol of their devotion and mission. The Redeemer's solemn pose reflects the spiritual gravitas of their role, historically involving negotiating the release of captives or assisting the poor. The Redeemer's function originated in the 12th century with the Order of the Most Holy Trinity and the Redemption of Captives, commonly known as the Trinitarians. Their work primarily took place in Europe, particularly Spain, Italy, and France, where they operated to redeem Christians captured during the Crusades or by pirates in the Mediterranean. Today, variations of this order still exist, continuing their charitable missions worldwide, albeit with modernized roles focused on education and healthcare. This print was created around 1862 by the talented lithographer A.L. Lemoine in Paris. It is part of a broader collection depicting ecclesiastical and ceremonial costumes, offering a rare glimpse into the attire and societal roles of the period. The detailed hand-coloring and historical accuracy make this an invaluable piece for collectors of religious history, costume studies, or antique prints. Translated Introduction by the Maker: 'These engravings are a faithful representation of the diverse costumes worn in sacred and public ceremonies of the Christian Church. By capturing these in their original form, we preserve a glimpse into the customs and traditions of different orders and clergy, serving as both a tribute to their enduring presence and an educational resource for posterity.'
