About the Item
Antique lithograph view of Lima, Peru – Vista General de Lima, 1865
This rare lithograph presents a panoramic view titled Vista General de Lima, showing the Peruvian capital in the mid-19th century. Published in 1865 as part of Mariano Felipe Paz Soldán’s Atlas Geográfico del Perú, it formed part of the first comprehensive national atlas of Peru, issued in Paris by the renowned lithographers Lemercier. Combining maps and views, the atlas was both a scientific and cultural project, documenting the geography and urban centers of Peru during a period of modernization and growth.
The composition focuses on a large circular structure in the foreground, most likely the Plaza de Toros de Acho, the bullring built in 1766 and one of the oldest such arenas in the Americas. Surrounding it are tree-lined avenues, cultivated fields, and residential buildings, reflecting Lima’s mix of urban and rural characteristics in the 19th century. In the distance, the skyline is punctuated by church towers and domes, including those of Lima’s historic colonial center, with the Andes faintly visible on the horizon.
The lithograph captures not only the architectural landmarks but also the sense of order and expansion that characterized Lima at the time. By situating the bullring prominently, the image underlines the cultural significance of public spectacles in Lima’s social life, while the spread of gardens and fields suggests the city’s ties to its agricultural hinterland. As part of Paz Soldán’s atlas, the print provided European and Peruvian readers with a visual understanding of the country’s capital in an era when illustrated atlases played a key role in shaping national identity.
Condition report:
Good condition with mild age toning. A few small foxing spots in the wide margins, not affecting the printed image. Strong impression with sepia tint stone. Plate mark clearly visible.
Framing tips:
This lithograph would suit a classic black or dark walnut frame with a cream or light beige mat, enhancing the sepia tones and historical character of the print. A double mat with a fine inner line in muted terracotta could subtly draw out the warm colors of the paper and architectural details.
