About the Item

Portraits of Australian aborigines based on Nicholas Petit’s engravings issued in the Baudin voyage account. 1. Top: Aboriginal man with his hair wrapped in paperbark strips told the French artist Nicolas-Martin Petit who was sketching him that his name was ‘Cour-rou-bari-gal’. As Booragy or Burroggy was the Aboriginal name for Bradleys Head, it is likely that he had replied to the artist’s question ‘What is your name?’ with kuri (man) and Boregegal (Bradleys Head Clan). There were two men known by the name Musquito at Port Jackson, one of them was in Bennelong’s group and died in 1806, the other a resistance leader and tracker, was hanged in 1825. The pale-throated sloth, occasionally known as the ai, is a species of three-toed sloth that inhabits tropical rainforests in northern South America. It is similar in appearance to, and often confused with, the brown-throated sloth, which has a much wider distribution. Landmark stone lithograph on fine Ziegler watermarked paper. Extremely rare 1816 antique hand colored stone lithograph by Carl Joseph Brodtmann from his extremely rare series: Naturhistorische Bilder Gallerie aus dem Thierreiche Lindau, Brodtmann [1816]. Brodtmann is considered a pioneer in the art of lithography employing techniques for "texture" that are quite similar to that of an aquatint.
