About the Item

Crocodiles, Lizards & Reptiles Print: Alligator, Monitor, Iguana – Antique 1867 This striking antique print depicts crocodiles, alligators, lizards, monitors, and iguanas, rendered in detailed hand-coloured engravings. It originates from the Atlas der Natuurlijke Geschiedenis voor scholen en huisgezinnen, adapted into Dutch by T.C. Winkler after Traugott Bromme, and published in Amsterdam by J.C. Loman in 1867. Created as an educational tool, this plate introduced 19th-century students to the diversity of reptiles worldwide. The labelled figures include: 1. Gharial (Gavialis gangeticus) 2. Nile crocodile (Crocodylus niloticus) 3. Komodo dragon or monitor lizard (Varanus species) 4. Alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) 5. Caiman (Caiman species) 6. Skink (Scincidae species) 7. Green iguana (Iguana iguana) 8. Flying dragon (Draco volans) 9. Basilisk lizard (Basiliscus species) 10. Chameleon (Chamaeleonidae species) 11. Agama lizard (Agamidae species) 12. Frilled lizard (Chlamydosaurus kingii) 13. Blue-tongued skink (Tiliqua scincoides) 14. Sand lizard (Lacerta agilis) 15. Glass lizard (Ophisaurus apodus) Produced using copper engraving with meticulous hand colouring, the print shows detailed anatomical lines and realistic patterns. Each reptile is presented in naturalistic poses within stylised landscapes or perched on tree branches, emphasising their physical adaptations and ecological niches. Such prints were essential for 19th-century zoological education before photography became common in field guides. Condition summary: Good condition for its age, with light overall toning and minor foxing mainly in the margins. The paper remains strong with no tears or repairs, and the hand colouring is vivid and well-preserved. Framing tips: Frame this reptile print in a dark wood, black, or walnut frame with a cream or off-white mount to enhance its intricate details and earthy tones. A gold frame adds antique warmth for traditional interiors. UV-protective glass is recommended to preserve colours and prevent further toning. This antique natural history print will enrich any zoological collection, reptile display, or educational interior, adding timeless scientific beauty and decorative intrigue to your wall.
