About the Item
Dutch Theologian Portrait – Leonardus Marius by Adriaen Matham, c.1651
This distinguished 17th-century portrait depicts the Dutch theologian and scholar Leonardus Marius (1587–1651), engraved shortly after his death in Amsterdam. He is shown seated, holding a pen and posed with theological books and a crucifix, symbols of his scholarly and religious life. His expression, attire, and bearing convey a calm authority and pious dignity, reflecting the humanist ideals of the Dutch Golden Age.
The engraving was executed by Adriaen Matham (c.1600–1660), a noted Dutch printmaker and son of Jacob Matham. Adriaen's detailed linework and subtle modeling of texture are hallmarks of his style, capturing the sitter’s character with precision and respect. The composition was drawn by M. Mijerre (as inscribed at lower left), likely a local draughtsman or student of the time.
The Latin inscription surrounding the oval cartouche commemorates Marius's life and service, including the year and place of his death (Amsterdam, 1651, at the age of 64). The Dutch poem below, attributed to J. V. Vondel (the foremost Dutch poet of the era), praises Marius's integrity and contributions to spiritual thought and scholarship.
This print is a prime example of Dutch commemorative portraiture—produced to honor eminent thinkers and clerics—and would appeal to collectors of theological history, Dutch baroque printmaking, and early modern humanist culture.
