The painter, graphic artist, and object artist is one of the most important representatives of German Informel. Inspired by the art of the Nouvelle École de Paris, he experiments with the intrinsic value of color matter and its psychological effect. In doing so, he focuses on the tension between painterly texture and graphic form (this also applies to the tactile objects he created from various materials between 1956 and 1959). In the 1960s and 1970s, he also used the destruction of the image carrier, for example by means of incisions or hammer blows, as a compositional device. In his late work, he incorporated pictorial elements into his designs that evoked associations with objects or figures.
From 1932 to 1935, Schumacher studied graphic design at the Dortmund School of Applied Arts. He then turned his attention to painting. In 1947, he presented his first solo exhibition and founded the artist group “junger westen” (young west). After a stay in Paris in 1951, he painted his first abstract pictures. From 1955 onwards, he took part in important exhibitions at home and abroad, including the Sao Paulo Biennial in 1959 and the documenta in Kassel (also in 1964), and received numerous awards. He taught as a professor at the Hamburg Art Academy from 1958 to 1960 and at the Karlsruhe Art Academy from 1966 to 1977. From 1968, he was a member of the Berlin Academy of Fine Arts. He also taught as a visiting professor at the Minneapolis School of Art in 1967/68 and at the Concorso Superiore Internazionale del Disegno of the Fondazione Antonio Ratti in Como in 1991. In 1969 and 1975, he spent extended periods in Djerba and, from 1971, in Ibiza.
