About the Item

Nicely colored original lithograph entitled "Turtle and Setting Mountains" depicting an Indian father and child, more than likely (judging by the locale), Blackfoot Indian tribe members. The lithograph is taken from a painting by Winold Reiss (1886-1953); a German painter who emigrated to America around 1913, where he spent the rest of his life. The print was produced to promote the wild and adventurous train company, The Great Northern Railway, whose line traversed the upper United States, passing through the Rockies and Glacier National Park. This image would have been in train stations and lobbies across the country, to encourage western travel and exploration during the middle and late 1930's. The Great Northern Railway was completed in 1893 and maintained their corporate offices in St. Paul Minnesota. All of the relevant identifying markings can be located on the lower right and lower left, with the title of the print in the middle lower border. The condition of the litho is excellent, with no fading, strong colors, and no tears or touch up of any kind; it is all original. The picture, measuring 10 1/2" high x 8" wide, is mounted in a simulated wood cross-banded contemporary frame (under glass) which, with the 1 /1/2" matte, measures 16 1/4" high x 13 1/8" wide overall..
