Framed Woodblock Print by Leonard Baskin, USA c 1969
About the Item
Titled "Betrayal", this work by Leonard Baskin is a woodblock print on rice paper. It is signed and numbered 45/100. It is presented in an outstanding silver water-gilded frame which looks even better in person than the images here show. Both the print and frame are in very fine condition.
Leonard Baskin (August 15, 1922 – June 3, 2000) was an American sculptor, draughtsman and graphic artist, as well as founder of the Gehenna Press (1942–2000). One of America's first fine arts presses, it went on to become "one of the most important and comprehensive art presses of the world", often featuring the work of celebrated poets, such as Sylvia Plath, Ted Hughes, Anthony Hecht, and James Baldwin side by side with Baskin's bold, stark, energetic and often dramatic black-and-white prints. Called a "Sculptor of Stark Memorials" by the New York Times, Baskin is also known for his wood, limestone, bronze, and large-scale woodblock prints, which ranged from naturalistic to fanciful, and were frequently grotesque, featuring bloated figures or humans merging with animals. His monumental bronze sculpture, The Funeral Cortege, graces the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial in Washington, D.C.

Leonard Baskin
LEONARD BASKIN Born 1922, New Jersey; died 2000. Leonard Baskin was born the son of a Rabbi. He was educated in art at the New School for Social Research in New York City and at Yale University. Baskin regarded himself primarily as a sculptor, though he also excelled in printmaking, watercolor, and painting. The artist's mostly figurative work was at odds with much of the art making of his generation, but it nonetheless earned an impressive following. Baskin is widely regarded as one of the foremost American sculptors of the twentieth century. Boldly embracing political and social issues, he made art that he felt could affect individuals profoundly at both a personal and archetypal level. He also ran a printing press, and his artist books are considered some of the most impressive in the medium. Baskin's sculptures, books, and works on paper are found in most serious and important public and private collections in the world including the Amon Carter Museum, Fort Worth, The Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, D.C., and The Museum of Modern Art, New York.
