About the Item
Hand-colored lithograph views of the Cathedral and La Merced Church, Lima – 1865
Description:
This fine hand-colored lithograph sheet presents two important ecclesiastical monuments of Lima: the *Iglesia de La Merced* and the *Catedral de Lima*. It was published in 1865 in Mariano Felipe Paz Soldán’s *Atlas Geográfico del Perú*, the first national atlas of Peru, printed in Paris by the prestigious firm Lemercier.
The upper image shows the *Iglesia de La Merced*, one of Lima’s most significant colonial churches. Originally founded in the 16th century, the church was rebuilt after successive earthquakes and became known for its richly ornamented baroque façade. The lithograph highlights the tall bell tower, intricate façade detailing, and the long nave extending into the background, capturing both its grandeur and its integration into the city’s streetscape.
The lower image depicts the *Catedral de Lima*, the city’s most iconic religious landmark, located on the Plaza Mayor. Founded in 1535 by Francisco Pizarro, the cathedral was rebuilt several times and, by the 19th century, displayed an impressive neoclassical and baroque-inspired façade flanked by two imposing towers. The hand-coloring brings out the architectural contrasts and gives depth to the details of this monumental structure.
Together, these two views provide a vivid visual record of Lima’s religious architecture during the 19th century. They underscore the importance of the Catholic Church in urban life while also preserving the appearance of two of the capital’s most celebrated monuments. For collectors of Latin American prints, architecture, or ecclesiastical art, this lithograph offers both historical and decorative appeal.
Condition report:
Very good condition. Original hand-coloring well preserved with soft pastel tones. Minor age toning and a few foxing spots in margins, not affecting the printed areas. Wide margins intact, plate mark visible.
Framing tips:
A vertical frame with a wide cream mat will best display both images. A dark wooden or black frame will provide strong contrast, while a thin gold inner border can highlight the architectural grandeur of the churches.
