Important Framed Lithograph of the Grapeshot Clipper Ship Joseph Currier & Ives

About the Item

An important framed lithograph of the "Grapeshot" clipper ship belonging to Geo Law Esq. NY. This print is reprinted from Lith by Currier & Ives, American, active 1834–1907. Its frame is made from wood in a deep rosewood color. It is matted in a blue mat, with small red and white inner matting. The "Grapeshot" captured headlines in 1855 when it was used to pursue the murderer Louis Baker. Barker's friend John Morrissey had a dispute with William "Bill the Butcher" Poole, a member of the New York City gang, "The Bowery Boys." (Daniel Day-Lewis' character in the movie "Gangs of New York" was based on Bill the Butcher.) Baker killed "Bill the Butcher" and fled on the brig "Isabelle Jewett." George Law offered the use of his new clipper ship "Grapeshot for the pursuit. The offer was accepted and Baker was captured. He was tried three times, each one ending in a hung jury. At the bottom, it reads: "The celebrated clipper bark Grapeshot belonging to Geo Law Esq. NY" The lithograph has not been inspected outside the frame. This piece was framed in Oklahoma City at a later period. Dimensions: 18" Tall 22" Wide 1" Deep.
