Islamic Ritual Print Stoning of the Great Devil, 1863 Dutch Lithograph

About the Item

Islamic Ritual Print Stoning of the Great Devil, 1863 Dutch Lithograph This evocative 19th-century lithograph, titled “Het Steenigen van den Grooten Duivel” (The Stoning of the Great Devil), is a striking visual representation of a central rite of the Islamic pilgrimage, the Hajj. The ritual, known in Arabic as *Ramy al-Jamarāt*, involves pilgrims throwing stones at three pillars (jamarat), symbolically rejecting evil. This particular image, rendered in monochrome tones with detailed linework, captures a dramatic and panoramic view of the mass of pilgrims engaged in the act. In the foreground, men in white garments—typical pilgrimage attire—gather and hurl stones toward a symbolic structure in the distance, representing the devil. To the side, a dense crowd climbs onto an elevated platform, emphasizing the collective scale of the ritual. The print was published in 1863 as part of a Dutch educational series titled *De Voornaamste Godsdiensten* (The Principal Religions), in the section called *Het Islamisme* (Islam), created by the Dutch Arabist and historian Dr. Reinhart Pieter Anne Dozy. Dozy was a professor at the University of Leiden and a prominent Orientalist whose scholarship focused on Islamic culture, language, and history. The lithograph itself was executed by the Dutch printing firm Emrik & Binger in Haarlem, known for their high-quality lithographic work during the mid-19th century. This artwork offers a rare and respectful European visual interpretation of Islamic rituals from a period when such depictions were uncommon. It stands as both a cultural artifact and an educational illustration, contributing to greater awareness of non-Western traditions during a time of increasing global scholarly interest. Condition summary: This print is in good antique condition with minor foxing on the lower edge. Framing Tips: Frame it using a warm off-white or light sand-colored mount with a dark wood or simple black frame to highlight the lithograph's historic and documentary qualities.
