About the Item
Japanese Edo-Period Landscape with Poem – Pavilion and Autumn Hills, c.1790
Description:
This original Japanese woodblock print from the late Edo period, circa 1790, depicts a tranquil mountain landscape accompanied by a poetic inscription. The composition features a red-lacquered pavilion perched on a rocky outcrop, overlooking a cascading waterfall that winds through a lush, autumnal valley. The soft green and red tones, accented by finely drawn lines, capture the serenity and subtle grandeur of Japan’s countryside in fall.
The upper portion of the print contains a calligraphic poem in elegant script, likely a waka or kanshi verse, reflecting on the changing season, the sound of flowing water, and the beauty of nature. Such prints, which combine image and poetry, were often produced for educated collectors of the Edo literati class, who valued the integration of painting, poetry, and calligraphy—known as *sanju no gei* (the “three perfections”).
The delicate linework and gentle use of color suggest a Kyoto or Osaka school artist, possibly working in the circle of Nishikawa Sukenobu or Kitao Shigemasa. The artist captures the harmony between human presence and nature: a lone traveler crossing a mountain path, and another figure walking below among rocks and maples. The distant mountain and pale sun convey a quiet sense of depth, evoking the mood of early autumn.
This print exemplifies the refined sensibility of late 18th-century Japanese art, where subtle color, calligraphic grace, and poetic sentiment merge seamlessly. A fine example for collectors of Edo-period landscape and poetry prints, it represents a moment of calm beauty in the visual language of Japan’s classical aesthetic.
Condition report:
Good condition for age, with some light toning and minor handling marks. Small edge wear and a faint vertical center fold. Colors remain soft yet well preserved, and the text is clearly legible.
Framing tips:
This poetic landscape pairs beautifully with a warm natural wood or gold-toned frame and a light cream mat. The combination enhances the gentle colors and gives the work a refined, contemplative presentation suited for both modern and traditional interiors.
