The portrait shows Strauß in midlife, dressed in formal attire with a dark coat and high-collared shirt. His serious expression and direct gaze reflect both his intellectual determination and the weight of his reputation as a controversial thinker. At the lower right, the lithograph is signed in the stone: “Steend. van J. D. Steuerwaldt”, indicating the Hamburg lithographer Johann Daniel Steuerwaldt (1808–1865).
