Luke Butler toys with contemporary mythology. To him, THE END is a classical figure that looms in our consciousness, despite our ability to see right through it. As a static image floating in its own pictorial space, it seems contradictory, absurd, and poignant—an anti-picture. In referring only to itself, it sheds its familiar narrative role and takes up that of a memento mori.
Luke Butler’s work is a continuing investigation into the peculiar reality of popular culture. Inherently disposable, it is all but inseparable from our lives, and is a genuine point of connection with other people. His work borrows its universal language and bends it toward subjectivity–to anxiety, masculinity, mortality, and a lifelong fascination with the figures that tell the stories.
In Butler’s series aptly titled The End, Luke paints THE END as a figure in a landscape. Removed from its narrative role, it is both familiar and strange. As a static image, it seems contradictory, absurd, and poignant–an anti-picture. Its message strays, becoming evocative rather than declarative, no longer an exit, but a memento mori.
If The End turns the actual landscape legendary and evanescent, the artist's other works draw humanity out of iconic television figures. Using imagery from the 1970s, these works emphasize vulnerability, sorrow, ambiguity–things more commonly seen outside the tidy world of televised narrative. In paint, on canvas, frozen in mid-gesture, men of action become figures of pathos. They have somewhat the appearance of religious painting. Television was an indelible and impactful presence in Luke’s young life. Insinuating its legendary figures into a larger picture of mythology is one way for him to see beyond its frame.
Butler has held solo exhibitions in Los Angeles and San Francisco, and has been included in numerous group shows, most notably at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego and the 2010 California Biennial at the Orange County Museum of Art.

MICHAEL RAEDECKER Day at Night, 2023
Located in New York, NY
Laser printer pigment transfer, dispersion, acrylic, glitter, and thread on canvas. Each unique edition is accompanied by the new comprehensive monograph, Michael Raedecker, published by Phaidon
Edition of 10
This work is signed, titled, numbered, dated by year on verso, and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity.
Phaidon and Artspace are pleased to present day at night, a new series of ten unique embroidered prints on canvas by contemporary artist Michael Raedecker. Released on the occasion of Raedecker’s new comprehensive Phaidon survey, each limited edition includes a signed copy of the publication as well as a signed Certificate of Authenticity.
Since the beginning of his career as a painter, Raedecker has incorporated embroidery into his works as a means of challenging the conventional hierarchy of fine art techniques. His new day at night editions include thread, paint, and glitter hand-applied throughout, making each piece a singular work of art.
Raedecker’s practice as a whole is engaged with a process of re-contextualizing familiar ideas and spaces, asking the viewer to question held assumptions. Swimming pools are a recurring subject for Raedecker, who is fascinated by the ways in which paintings of pools...

David Byrne, legendary frontman of American band The Talking Heads and author of How Music Works, was born in Dumbarton, Scotland in 1952. Byrne is a multi-intrumentalist most known for his high-energy performances and distinctive, wide-ranging voice. He formed The Talking Heads with fellow RISD student, Chris Frantz, and Frantz's girlfriend, Tina Weymouth, in 1975 while living in New York City. In 1990 he founded the world music record label Luaka Bop, which released music from artists including Os Mutantes, Tom Ze, and Zap Mama.
Byrne's solo career has been broad and multi-disciplinary. Since the 1990s, Byrne has exhibited his visual artwork at numerous galleries including Pace/MacGill Gallery in New York City. In 2006 he released Arboretum, a collection of his philosophical drawings, published by McSweeney's. Byrne's drawings are what he calls "mental maps of imaginary territory." Says Byrne, "if you can draw a relationship, it can exist... the world keeps opening up, unfolding, and just when we expect it to be closed—to be a sealed sensible box—it shows us something completely surprising." In 2010, Byrne exhibited his piece "Guitar Pedals...

"I shot the video in 2000, in my home in SoHo. I knew prior to shooting what I wanted to do and I envisioned the piece exactly as it turned out. First, I experimented with a metal cookie tin placed on a hot stove. It didn't work because the ice cube melted too quickly. I tried a hairdryer but as the cube melted, the hair-blower blew the remaining cube away. Thus, I let the cube melt on it's own accord in real time. It took about three hours to fully dissolve into a puddle of water. I used a glass plate on Glassene paper: all that transparency made the black lines of the plate look line a charcoal line drawing. The title is important because it precisely explains the work: The Long Dissolve is exactly of an ice cube dissolving." —Burt Barr
Claiming that "black and white are the only two colors I'll ever need," Burt Barr is a believer in the single take and the static shot. Meant to be projected directly onto a wall and looped for continual viewing, his films equate more to hanging drawings or black and white photographs than they are moving pictures...
