Native American, Mohawk Chief, Folio Handcolored Stone Lithograph

About the Item

Striking lithographic portrait of the famed Mohawk leader who fought with Great Britain in the American Revolution in the province of New York. Fine original stone lithograph of Joseph Brant (Thayendanegea) with hand colour. Lithographed on stone by Karl Joseph Brodtmann Published in 1824. Mohawk leader, educated at an Anglican mission school and lifelong ally of the British. Fought as a young man against the French and later during the War of American Independence. Travelled to London in 1775 to gain assurance that Mohawk support for the British cause would be rewarded by fair treatment in respect of land rights. When the treaty of 1783 and the formation of the United States of America failed to protect native lands, Brant negotiated territory along the Grand River on the north shore of Lake Erie for the Iroquois people (of whom the Mohawks were a part). In order to secure promised compensation for losses suffered by native Americans who had supported Britain, he travelled again to London in 1785-6. The remaining decades of Brant's life were marked by concern to maintain Iroquois interests and to prevent encroachment on traditional lands by European and American settlers. Reference Winkler 105. Brodtmann is considered a pioneer in the art of lithography employing techniques for "texture" that are quite similar to that of an aquatint.
