Paul Maxwell (Frost Prairie, Arkansas,1925-2015) Limited Edition Pochoir Abstract, Pencil signed and numbered by the artist 73/100 and 74/100, each slightly different. Professionally framed. In frame 25"x46"1". Weight 15 lbs. Paul Maxwell was an important modern American artist, Paul Maxwell first studied art techniques at Principia College in St. Louis (graduated, 1950). He then continued his studies at the Claremont Graduate School, California, in Lausanne, Switzerland, and at the University of Houston, where he also served as an art instructor. Maxwell also founded the Contemporary Arts Foundation in Oklahoma City. Today examples of his art will be found in the permanent collections of the Dallas Museum of Fine Arts, Oklahoma Art Center, Houston Museum of Fine Arts, University of Texas Museum of Fine Arts and DeCordova Museum, Massachusetts.
Not only had Paul Maxwell established himself as an artist of national importance, but, more importantly, he was one of the few artists who has developed a new medium for his art.
This process, called "stencil-casting," has been patented by Maxwell, (making him one of the few living artists to have his own patented medium).
Stencil-casting is a unique process, similar in some respects to silkscreening. The process permited Maxwell to work in a heavy, precisely-controlled relief on any appropriate surface, including paper, vinyl, wood or fabric. A unique aspect of stencil-casting is that it literally has no size limit. The artist, therefore, is not restricted to those dimensions which characterize most traditional media.
Paul Maxwell was a sculptor, painter, and printmaker in several other media.
In addition to producing art, Maxwell was vitally interested in art education and has produced an art oriented television series. He founded the Contemporary Arts Foundation in Oklahoma City which has been an important influence on the cultural scene in the Southwest.
The artist's monumental wall mural in the Dallas Apparel Mart, fondly called the "Max Wall," was used as the backdrop for a major movie, "Logan's Run," set in the 23rd Century.
Maxwell's work has been exhibited throughout the United States and Europe, with pieces in numerous corporate and private collections.

Paul Maxwell
Paul Maxwell was born in Frost Prairie, Arkansas, in 1925. When Maxwell was nine, the family moved to Bastrop, Louisiana, where he completed high school. Maxwell went on to graduate from Principia College in Elsah, Illinois, in 1950 with a BA in art, followed by graduate work at Claremont College in California. Maxwell was a modern artist and sculptor who developed a technique for using stencils to create thickly textured and layered surfaces, as well as objects he patented as “stencil casting” but that later became known as “Maxwell Pochoir.” He was also known for creating the “Max Wall” in the West Atrium of the Dallas Apparel Mart; although demolished in 2006, it can be seen as a backdrop in the science-fiction movie Logan’s Run. His work is highly abstract and often consists of some kind of grid — a form that is non-hierarchical and illustrates a major theme of his work. Maxwell died in 2015.
