About the Item

Presented is a head and shoulders portrait of Alexander Hamilton by Jacques Reich. Reich completed the etching in 1903 and signed the print in pencil at the bottom left hand corner. Jacques Reich was Hungarian-born portrait etcher, active mainly in the United States. After studying at the National Academy of Design in New York and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia, Reich established a studio in New York City in 1885. Working on private commissions and portrait designs for Appelton’s Cyclopaedia of American Biography and Scribner’s Cylodaedia of Painters and Paintings, Reich honed his portraiture technique and skill. In the early 1890s, Reich began working on copper plates, etching a series of 14 portraits of American and English artists, writers, and poets. Reich completed a series of etched portraits titled “Famous Americans,” which depicts 25 subjects, and includes Franklin, Carnegie, Curtis, Roosevelt, Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, and Hamilton, as displayed here. The Hamilton portrait is a beautifully executed etching. Reich based his portrait off the famous John Trumbull oil painting of Hamilton. There was a great public demand for portraits of Hamilton after his death by duel with Aaron Burr, and Trumbull painted several of Hamilton between the years 1804 and 1806. Trumbull based all of his Hamilton paintings from an earlier portrait he had made from life. As one of the Founding Fathers of the United States and an author of the Federalist Papers, Alexander Hamilton's (1757 – 1804) legacy lives on even centuries after his death. Hamilton was an American statesman, politician, scholar, military commander, lawyer, banker and economist that held a very important role in the founding of the United States. Alexander Hamilton acted as the country's very first Secretary of the Treasury and authored countless policies under George Washington's administration. Hamilton was instrumental in the founding of the first national bank, the country's first tariff system, and established commercial economic policy for the newly formed nation. CONDITION: Very good condition. Paper is healthy, with full margins and moderate toning. Pencil signed “Jacques Reich” at the bottom left margin. Printed with a facsimile signature “A. Hamilton” in the bottom right corner. Etching is archivally framed with acid-free double mats, UV glass, and a custom wooden frame. Framed dimensions: 26" H x 21 1/2" W x 1" D.
