About the Item
Procession to the Colosseum Through the Arch of Titus, Rome, 1824
This captivating hand-colored engraving titled “Procession to the Colosseum” depicts a solemn religious scene unfolding beneath the ancient Arch of Titus in Rome. A line of hooded friars, monks, and local townspeople make their way in devotional silence toward the historic amphitheater, carrying crucifixes and lanterns. In the foreground, women and children observe with reverence, highlighting the communal and multigenerational nature of Catholic processions during the early 19th century.
The Arch of Titus, a 1st-century Roman triumphal arch commemorating Emperor Titus’s victories, serves here as both a physical and symbolic threshold—linking classical antiquity to the living religious traditions of modern Rome. The juxtaposition of the aged monument, with its crumbling stonework overgrown with ivy, and the vibrant procession illustrates how the sacred and the historic intertwine in everyday life.
This engraving was published in London in 1824 by William Sams, known for his richly colored costume and ceremonial prints intended to inform and delight British audiences with depictions of continental life. The work likely comes from a larger series capturing papal rituals and Italian customs. The detailed rendering of figures, accurate architectural portrayal, and subtle color palette—faded pink skies, ochres, and rich earth tones—are typical of the refined taste of the Regency period.
The print is both documentary and decorative, ideal for collectors of ecclesiastical art, travel history, or Grand Tour-era imagery. It invites the viewer into a timeless moment of ritual and reverence, framed by one of Rome’s most iconic ruins.

Antique Print of the Entrance to the Tomb of Absalom in Jerusalem, '1831'
Located in Langweer, NL
Original antique print of the entrance to the Tomb of Absalom and Cave of Jehosophat. This print originates from 'Costume Antico e Moderno: Palestine, China, India, Oceania' by Ferrario. Published 1831.
Tomb of Absalom (Hebrew: יד אבשלום, Transl. Yad Avshalom; literally Absalom's Memorial), also called Absalom's Pillar, is an ancient monumental rock-cut tomb with a conical roof located in the Kidron Valley in Jerusalem, a few metres from the Tomb of Zechariah and the Tomb of Benei Hezir. Although traditionally ascribed to Absalom, the rebellious son of King David of Israël (circa 1000 BC), recent scholarship has dated it to the 1st century AD.
The tomb is not only a burial structure in its own right, with its upper part serving as a nefesh or funeral monument...

Funeral Procession in Rome with Hooded Figures and Clergy, London 1820

Funeral Procession in Rome with Hooded Figures and Clergy, London 1820
This remarkable hand-colored print, titled “A Funeral Procession in Rome,” offers an evocative portrayal of a traditional Roman Catholic funeral rite in early 19th-century Italy. Drawn by the artist K. Brodtmann in 1820 and published by William Sams in London, this lithograph provides a vivid, carefully staged glimpse into a deeply ceremonial aspect of Roman religious life.
At the center of the composition is the coffin, ornately draped and carried on a litter adorned with tall white candles. Hooded penitents in long white robes, known as *confratelli*, process solemnly in front of and behind the bier. These members of religious brotherhoods, identifiable by their distinctive pointed hoods and blue cord sashes, traditionally took part in such rituals of public devotion and mourning.
Behind them follows a group of clergy in white surplices and black cassocks. One priest stands out in an elaborate gold-embroidered chasuble, emphasizing his seniority or special role in the rite. To the right, more acolytes and a hooded standard-bearer carrying a religious banner complete the scene. At the far left, a layman hefts a large wooden cross...
