Set of Six 19th Century Hand-Colored Marine Biology Prints

About the Item

Fascinating set of six 19th century steel engraved etchings or prints of marine biology species. Five of the six prints were engraved by William Lizars London, England with signatures. Each matted and framed in gilt wood frames later in Berkeley, CA. Five of the six prints are matching size while one is slightly larger and depicts a whale species. The whale measures 11 inches wide and 8.5 inches high. Lizars was considered one of the finest engravers in history. He was a Scottish engraver and painter who also did plates for Audubon's Birds of America. From an estate in San Francisco, CA.

    Wear consistent with age and use. Beautifully crafted with age appropriate wear. Prints have fading, foxing, and aged patina as seen in photos. Gilt frames have minor chips and scuffs as expected.
