Set of Two Mid-Century French Framed Color Prints by Albert Brenet (1903-2005)

About the Item

Two authentic, framed, 1950s full-colored prints after originals by French artist Albert Brenet (1903-2005). One depicting a colorful scene from Thailand and the other from Bolivia. Victor Albert Eugène Brenet was born in 1903 in Harfleur, France. Already drawn to sketching as a child, he began studying at Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris in 1921. What followed was a productive career as sculpture, painter and affichiste filled with travels around the world. At an early age he embarked on several military missions, always as a painter, and in 1936 he became Official Painter of the French Marine. He covered major events such as WWII, presidential visits abroad, the crowning of Queen Elisabeth, etc. He also worked for Life magazine, the French magazine l'Illustration as well as a multitude of commercial missions for transatlantic shipping companies, air line companies and such. The majority of his work features foreign destinations always painted on location during his extensive travels around the world. This set consists of two colorful prints. A scene from Thailand with performers from the classical dance-drama Khon. The other dancers and musiciens from Bolivia in traditional costumes. Both prints feature the artist's printed signature (see photos). The prints come in their original frames. They have been put under glass and framed in discrete, light-colored wood frames - coherent with the style of the prints and typical for the mid-century era. Both prints are in good vintage condition. No signs of past humidity. The frames show minor signs of wear consistent with age (see photos). Dimension: width 59 cm/ 23 1/4", height 48 cm/ 18 3/4", depth 1 cm/ 1/2"/. Weight as a set of two framed prints: 4118 g/ 9 lbs

  • Set of Four Antique French Religious Carbon Prints by Maison AD. Braun & Cie
    Located in COLMAR, FR
These four original carbon prints have been made by the French publishing house Maison Braun & Cie. (see labels on the backs). The company was launched in 1853 in the town of Dornach, Alsace, France by Adolphe Braun (1812-1877). The company specialized in (large) reproductions of artworks and came to open offices in Paris (1868), London and New York. In 1883 the company, which had been taken over by Adolphe's son and other family members, became the official and sole photographer/publisher for the Louvre Museum in Paris and other stately owned museums in France. They also had a very impressive sale list of images from other reputed European museums and collections. The company was taken over in the 1950s and the brand ceased to exist in 1969. This set consists of four framed, original carbon prints of late middle-age religious paintings by Italian masters. These prints most likely date from late 1800s or early 1900s. The two large angels are sections from the Linaiuoli Triptych, dated 1433 and painted by the Italian artist Fra Angelico (circa 1387-1455). He is often referred to as the "painter of angels". The female saint holding a book is from the artwork "Annunciation" by the Italian painter Fra Filippo Lippi...

  • Mid-Century Modern French Original Signed Oil Panting of Wine Still-Life
    Located in COLMAR, FR
A moody still-life very much in a mid-century spirit. This vintage oil painting on stretched canvas has been sourced in the wine region of Alsace, France. It is very likely that it has been painted in this region as well since the wine bottles and the tall glass depicted have the typical shapes of Alsace wine bottles wine glasses. The painting is signed by the artist in the lower right corner and dated December (XII) 1960. In addition, as can be seen in the lower left corner, the painting has been dedicated to René Fullgraff (In Memoriam). The artist has efficiently experimented with contrasts of dark shadows and lighter, sharp reflections in this artwork. There is also a visible study of vertical and horizontal lines still visible. And last but not least, a lovely work with layers and textures (see photos). The result is a somewhat dramatic and masculine, mid-century still-life. Perfect for a dining room, kitchen or library. Maybe over a MCM bar cart...

Beautiful oleograph of a Lippizaner Horse. This print originates from 'Pferde-Rassen'. Made after O. Eerelman. Otto Eerelman (1839–1926) was a Dutch painter, best known for his depictions of dogs and horses. Born in Groningen, the Netherlands, Eerelman was also recognized as a court painter and created several portraits of Queen Wilhelmina as both a princess and a monarch.
