Signed 19th Century Woodblock Print Depicting a Japanese Iris in Gilt Frame

$595

About

A Japanese woodblock print from the 19th century depicting a Japanese Iris, signed upper right. Created in Japan during the 19th century, this woodblock print attracts our attention with its delicate and minimalist depiction of a summer flower, the purple Japanese Iris, standing out beautifully on a cream background. The process of woodblock printing would start with an artist’s drawing that would be transferred from paper to a cherry-wood block, which was carved and then inked, before blank sheets of paper were laid on top. Signed upper right and set inside a gilded frame under glass, this 19th century Japanese woodblock print will bring a touch of subtle elegance to any wall, perhaps hung above a commode, buffet or side table.
