About the Item

"Source" a rare artist's working print, was the basis for a mural or bas-relief sculpture for the interior or facade of a building in the Art Deco era probably a water treatment building in the Baltimore area. Perhaps because the original drawings were executed in a chalk that was easily smudged, Robert McGill Mackall may have used this print to present his design ideas, and to revise details as needed. (The print was framed by Ludwig Katzenstein in Baltimore.) A companion piece showing a scientist in his laboratory, entitled "Purification" is available (with details changed by the artist, including the scientist's collar). Mackall lived most of his life in Baltimore the Maryland Historical Society, the Morris Museum of Art and the Maryland State Archives own his work.

"Progress of Civilization" Art Deco Masterpiece by Muralist Aiden Lassell Ripley
By Aiden Lassell Ripley
Located in Philadelphia, PA
In this remarkable drawing, famed muralist Lassell Ripley depicts primitive man, warming himself by the fire with little to wear, looking into the distance toward the bright, white Art Deco spires of modern civilization. The contrast of early mankind with the advances of 1930s America is inspiring and beautiful, and Ripley clearly draw this to prepare for a mural project, probably unexecuted. Ripley is best known for his sportsman paintings, highly collectible today, but early in his career he became known for his murals, including several depicting the life of Paul Revere for the post office in Lexington...
