About the Item
"Tribute 21", consisted of 21 lithographs, an edition of 22, that was created by Rauschenberg as homage to iconic American themes of accomplishment. Rauschenberg presented a complete set to the United Nations on the occasion of "Dialogues of Peace" in 1995.
Robert Rauschenberg (American 1925-2008) began his formal art education at the Kansas City Art Institute in 1946. The following year he went to Paris to study at the Académie Julian. In 1948 Rauschenberg returned to America to study with Josef Albers at Black Mountain College in North Carolina.
About his art Rauschenberg explained: "Painting relates to both art and life. I try to act in the gap between the two."
In 1958 Rauschenberg had an exhibition in New York City that catapulted him to prominence, and his paintings soon entered the collections of every large museum in America and abroad. In 1964 Rauschenberg received first prize at the Venice Biennale.
Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, he experimented with collage and new ways to transfer photographs. In 1997 the Solomon R Guggenheim Museum, New York City, staged a major exhibition of his works, showcasing the breadth and beauty of his work and its influence over the second half of the century. In addition to painting and sculpture, Rauschenberg’s long career also included significant contributions to printmaking and Performance Art.
