Original French Design Classic Pierre Chapo B17 Bookshelf, 1970s
About the Item
A beautiful, original edition B17 bookshelf designed by Pierre Chapo in French solid elm.
The vintage B17 shelf is a highly sought after piece from the Chapo workshop; it combines ingenious design with a sculptural appearance.
French elm is due to the Dutch elm disease extremely rare to find these days, and recent editions are generally made of oak which have a completely different appearance compared to the warm, vintage look that an aged Chapo piece provides.
Vintage Chapo pieces have seen a steady increase in value over the years, and make excellent investment objects.
Pierre Chapo’s designs have been heavily influenced by works from from the Bauhaus period and designers like le Corbusier and Charlotte Perriand. By studying his pieces one thing clearly stands out: his focus on details, craftsmanship and the relatively bulky and rigid shapes used in his furniture.
Other works include the S11 chair, the T22 coffee table and the R08 Sideboard: Pierre Chapo can be considered as one of the most recognized designers from the French Modernist period.

Condition: Excellent vintage condition, showing beautiful patina on the wood, minimal signs of use. The wood has been re-treated with cooked linseed oil as per Chapo’s instructions.

Pierre Chapo
Pierre Chapo, who was born in Paris, France, in July 1927, was initially interested in becoming a professional painter. However, after a chance meeting with a shipbuilder who introduced him to wood and woodworking, Chapo changed his focus and decided to study architectural studies at the prestigious École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris.
After graduating, Chapo and his wife, the sculptor and painter Nicole Lormier, started traveling extensively through Scandinavia and Central America. Among the many places the couple visited was Taliesin West, the home and studio of Frank Lloyd Wright — a visit that had a lasting influence on Chapo’s future work and designs.
