19th Century Persian Baluch Tribal Double Saddlebag in Blue, Pale Yellow, Navy
About the Item
A 19th century Persian Baluch tribal soumak double saddlebag. The front of the bag has a beautiful geometric design in a green/blue color set on a yellow background. The variation in color in the green/blue design is very beautiful. The Baluch double saddlebags have a flatwoven kilim in a rich brown and rust red color.
This complete saddlebag is also known as “khorjin” in Persian, or a double bag set. These bags are renowned for their beautiful colors and design which is the result of using fine wool for both pile and the foundation of the rugs and the use of organic vegetable dyes. One usually sees only one of the panels but this piece has both side panels and the banded design kilim which forms the back of the bag. The saddlebags were used by tribes to move their household items from one location to another from their seasonal moves.
