Tapestry Rug “Tuppamattan" by Marianne Richter for Märta Måås-Fjetterström

About the Item

This is a rare handwoven and large tapestry rug designed by Marianne Richter (1916-2010) for AB Märta Måås-Fjetterströms ateliers in Båstad, Sweden. The composition is called "Tuppamattan" ("Rooster Carpet"). Marianne Richter made a few variations (colors and size) of Tuppamattan for AB Märta Måås-Fjetterströms ateliers. But each one is unique with a individual combination of colors and size. The rug, crafted from sturdy materials like wool and linen, has been hung on the wall and never used on the floor, so its condition is near excellent. A beautiful creation depicting four roosters (or peacocks) colored in turquoise, emerald green and aquamarine shades contrasted with pink details. Designer initials MR in the lower right corner and the producer AB Märta Måås-Fjetterströms initials ABMMF in the lower left corner. The tapestry is in very good condition with minimum age appropriate wear. Tapestry technique in wool. Warp of linen, weft of wool. Size: 176 x 160 cm Marianne Richter’s “Tuppamattan" is represented in the collections of Nationalmuseum in Stockholm (inventory number NMK 39/1951). “Tuppamattan” is also featured (page 168) in the exhibition catalogue for Liljevalchs Art Gallery, Exhibition“Märta Måås-Fjetterström - Märta flyger igen, 90 år med Märta Måås-Fjetterström”, 2009. Marianne Richter (1916-2010) was educated at the Technical School in Stockholm. After a period at Hemslöjden textile workshops in Växjö, she was asked by the textile artist Barbro Nilsson, artistic director of Märta Måås-Fjetterström's ateliers in Båstad, to start working there.

Börne Augustsson's artistry shines through in this Swedish Modern glass vase created for Åseda Glassworks. Meticulously hand-blown, this Scandinavian Modern piece showcases Augustsson's organic design sensibilities. The vase features a striking violet, so dark that it appears to be black, casing beneath a transparent layer, with the latter expertly treated to create captivating organic pulled shapes. Notably, this vase bears an engraving underneath: "Fa W Johansson Orrefors 25." Despite this marking, it was indeed designed and crafted by Börne Augustsson for Åseda Glassworks. Walter Johansson gained notoriety for his somewhat questionable involvement in buying and selling...
