About the Item

This striking antique Kashmiri kani shawl features a powerful starburst medallion that radiates outward in complex floral and paisley arrangements, masterfully woven in rich tones of red, blue, ivory, and gold. The high contrast between the black central field and the vibrant boteh motifs creates a visual rhythm that pulls the eye outward in all directions—a classic hallmark of Kashmir’s finest late 19th-century shawl production. Woven using the traditional kani technique—where each color change is handled with a separate bobbin—this piece displays tremendous skill and labor. A woven inscription is neatly worked into the center, likely the signature of the master weaver or workshop, which adds both historical significance and collector value. The wide border provides a bold frame that makes the piece equally suited for use as a dramatic wall hanging or table textile. In nice antique condition with light wear to edges and fringes, this piece comes from the private collection of a prominent antique rug dealer in Amherst, MA. A perfect example of a late 19th-century Kashmiri masterpiece. 6’2 x 6’2
