Antique Georgian Black Enamel and Gold Hair Art Mourning Brooch or Pin

About the Item

A fine Georgian gold and enamel hair art mourning pin. With blonde braided hair set behind glass in a worked gold and black enamel setting. The dedication on the reverse reads: "In Memory of an affectionate Brother Died Jan 2nd, 1824 Aged 36". In the Georgian and Victorian eras, woven hair art was used to memorialize a departed loved one or given as a keepsake memorial for a loved one in their absence. This pin clearly kept a dear brother in an intimate proximity. The gold tests as 10k and is possibly 12K (as many of these early pieces are.)
