About the Item

This rather unusual brooch pendant watch is one of the most unusual ladies pieces of jewellery we have had in our collection to date. Crafted during the early 20th Century in the Belle Epoque taste, the piece is in the form of a pearl and diamond bow which has a detachable 'swivel' watch hanging from the centre. The 14 karat yellow gold bow brooch is set with small natural cultured seed pearls and three old European cut diamonds of H colour and SI clarity totalling 0.015 carat. To the rear of this brooch is a small 'fishtail' which allows a small ladies 'swivel' watch to hang. One side of this watch reveals a white dial which has green Arabic numbers and retailing name of 'Bigelow Kennard & Co Boston'. The reverse side of this shows a gridwork of natural cultured seed pearls which are interspersed with 45 single cut emeralds. The pocket watch to the inside of the rear has marks for 18 karat gold and Swiss manufacture. Bigelow Kennard & Co were a North American maker prominent in the late 19th and very early 20th Century. The watch is mechanical in its movement and has a crown wound and pin set movement which is in working order, however has not been tested for accuracy. The watch has a serial number of '301257' inscribed into the rear. The firm operated in Boston between 1830 and 1922, and from the appearance of this piece we can be fairly confident that it was produced in the first 15 or so years of the 20th Century. An exquisite way for a lady of the early 20th Century to have been able to discreetly tell the time, or a beautiful addition to the collection of someone interested in the Belle Epoque period. Marked - 'Bigelow Kennard & Co Boston' to dial and '14K' and '0.750' respectively Measures - 5.25cm L x 3cm W (when watch is attached to the brooch) Total diamond weight - 0.015 carat Total weight of piece - 20.32 grams
