French Antique 18K Gold & Silver Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald & Diamond Wing Brooch
About the Item
An antique ruby, sapphire, emerald, diamond, silver, and yellow gold brooch, comprising ten cushion shaped rubies, six cushion shaped sapphires, ten cushion shaped emeralds, and sixty rose cut diamonds, set in silver, and backed in 18 karat yellow gold, with 18 karat yellow gold pin and fittings.
This beautiful Victorian (Napoleon III) era brooch is French in origin and designed as a wing. The brooch is adorned with vibrantly coloured rubies, sapphires, and emeralds, which contrast beautifully against the shimmering silver and glittering rose cut diamonds. The coloured gemstones are held within yellow gold settings, to contrast against the cool silver the diamonds are set in. The cushion shaped gemstones have been arranged to form the brightly coloured feathered plumage of a bird’s wing, with slim, elegant diamond feathers extending below. The back of the brooch has been beautifully engraved to resemble detailed feathers, an exquisite detail, as is to be expected of high-quality French jewellery of this era. The brooch is fitted with a yellow gold pin and C-shaped catch. The brooch fitting detaches, as this piece would originally have also fitted to a tiara or an aigrette, along with its matching opposite pair. The brooch is in excellent condition, one emerald a possible replacement. Wear and tear acquiescent with age.
The brooch measures 47mm wide, 18mm long, and is 4mm deep (excluding brooch fitting).
