Antique Victorian 18K Gold Etruscan Revival Banded Agate Athena Cameo Brooch
About the Item
A Victorian banded agate and yellow gold brooch, comprising one panel of carved banded agate, set in 18 karat yellow gold, with 18 karat yellow gold pin and fittings.
This striking Victorian brooch is set to the centre with a banded agate cameo. The agate panel has been carved to leave the depiction of Roman Goddess Athena in profile in the white band of agate, allowing the background to be black, and create contrast. The cameo is held within a gold bezel, adorned with twisted wirework. Further twisted wirework and beading creates concentric circles around the central panel, which is then topped with gold beaded finials. Triangular panels extend from either side of the brooch, creating an elongated lozenge shape. The triangular panels are adorned with intricate twisted wirework, and granulated beading, creating a scrolling motif. The triangular panels are edged with further twisted wirework. This exquisite Etruscan revival brooch reveals a locket compartment verso, with silver bezel and glass panel. The brooch has a bloomed finish, where the piece is dipped in a solution which dissolves the alloys in the top layer of gold, leaving a fine layer of pure gold. The brooch is complete with yellow gold pin and safety catch. The detailed work on this brooch is extremely fine. The brooch is in great condition, with one small ding to the end of one of the gold beads. Wear and tear acquiescent with age.
The Greek Goddess Athena (equated with Roman Goddess Minerva) was the goddess of wisdom, warfare, and handicraft. The Parthenon is dedicated to her, and she was regarded as the protectress of Athens.
The brooch measures 29mm long, 76.5mm wide, and 7.5mm deep (excluding pin and fittings).
