Antique Victorian 1870s 18K Gold Egyptian Revival Pharaoh Micro Mosaic Pendant

About the Item

An antique yellow gold, and micro mosaic pendant, comprising tiny mosaic panels in varying vibrant colours, set in 18 karat yellow gold, with 18 karat yellow gold fittings. This pendant contains a beautiful, extremely fine depiction of an Egyptian pharaoh in micro mosaic. This beautiful micro mosaic is the finest work I have come across, the micro mosaic is in truly wonderful condition, with no pieces damaged or missing. The top of the pendant is formed as a gold disc, with a border of twisted wirework and gold beading. The centre of the panel is adorned with four twisted wirework motifs, with beading at their centres. The pendant is articulated, allowing it to move with you, with a strikingly designed articulated drop. From here, the micro mosaic pendant is suspended, a gold disc, with a wirework and beaded border, matching the top of the pendant, surrounding the micro mosaic panel. The micro mosaic panel depicts an Egyptian pharaoh, on a vibrant turquoise background, the pharaoh’s headdress is picked out in a deep red colour, with gold accents. The pharaoh’s face is wonderfully finely detailed, using different colours to pick out the facial features, and areas of light and dark. The pendant was likely originally an earring, which has since been converted to a pendant, with a related area of discolouration on the back of the pendant. The piece would have been purchased during someone’s Grand Tour - during the 1860s and 1870s, Ancient Egypt was a source of inspiration. Wear and tear acquiescent with age. Pendant length: 53.5mm Pendant width: 20mm Pendant depth: 7mm Gross weight: 10.84g Hallmarks: none, tests as 18 karat gold, circa 1870
