Antique Victorian 1860s 18K Yellow Gold Swan Micro Mosaic Pendant
About the Item
A Victorian micro mosaic, and yellow gold pendant locket, comprising two micro mosaic panels, set in 18 karat yellow gold.
This glorious Victorian micro mosaic pendant is designed as 2 shield shaped pendants, the larger suspending the smaller. The larger shield shape panel contains an exquisitely crafted micro mosaic, depicting a swan on the water, surrounded by reeds. The swan is wonderfully detailed, facing to the left, and with feathers picked out in an ingenious colour palette, creating light and shadow. The swan floats atop pool of water, its white reflection cast across, with reeds shooting up around the edge. The sky is a luxuriant red hue, which contrast perfectly with the bright white and cool blue of the micro mosaic. The micro mosaic is held within a yellow gold bezel and is surrounded by a border of twisted wirework. The top of the shield is adorned with further twisted wirework, creating a scrolling motif, and is decorated with granulated beads. The larger shield is suspended from a large bale, adorned with twisted wirework, which will accommodate a substantial chain, if so desired. From the large shield, drops a smaller micro mosaic shield, of a matching design, depicting a swan facing to the right. Verso, the larger shield is complete with a hinged, glass covered locket compartment, within which a photograph, portrait miniature, or small memento could be placed. This piece is likely Italian in origin and has a bloomed finish (where the piece is dipped in a solution which dissolves the alloys in the gold, leaving a fine layer of pure gold). The pendant is in good condition, with a small amount of wear to the bale, and potentially a few small losses to the micro mosaic. Wear and tear acquiescent with age.
Swans mate for life, and thus symbolise fidelity, meaning this piece was likely a love token, and would likely have had a portrait miniature or early photograph within the locket compartment.

The overall design features a whole array of wonderful embellishments and craftsmanship; a profusely decorated frame made from solid 18ct gold is accented with layers of applied gold ribbons/bows, beads and twist-rope borders. What is particularly noteworthy about this frame/border is the fact it has a concave 'doughnut' like shape that contours the cameo whilst also allowing for the spinning locket design to function flawlessly. Upon unfastening the rear pin, the central cameo spins around and presents a locket with a portrait of a gentleman and the fine mechanism and craftsmanship of the central piece can be further appreciated. The portrayal of Hera 'in profile' (side on) is simply splendid with crisp engravings, attractive proportions and an almost lifelike texture/facial expression in the manner of Renaissance sculptures. The reverse side of the brooch reveals a large pin for fastening on to a coat lapel or jumper with an additional later added safety chain. Further, the bail at the top allows for this piece to be worn as a magnificent pendant necklace. All of the combined factors make this cameo brooch a wonderful collectable piece of 19th-century antique jewellery history which would not only make for an excellent display piece but an inimitable and breathtaking brooch to wear on special occasions.
