Antique Art Nouveau French 18K Yellow Gold Diamond Ruby and Enamel Bird Locket
About the Item
An Art Nouveau diamond, ruby, enamel, and yellow gold locket, comprising four cabochon rubies, and twenty-eight rose cut diamonds, and enamel, in 18 karat yellow gold.
This handsome Art Nouveau locket is oval in shape, and domed, creating a tactile, pebble-like locket, which feels wonderful in the hand. The locket is suspended from a large, tapered bale, with a reeded design, which allows the locket to be worn with a substantial chain, if desired. The front of the locket is adorned with magnificent enamel work, the likes of which I do not come across often, making this a truly exceptional piece of jewellery. A bird, I flight, plumage detailed in pale blue, dark blue, and ochre enamel, with wings and tail feathers studded with sparkling rose cut diamonds, clutches a sprig. The sprig it carries furls up and around the bird, bordering the locket. The sprig is adorned with green and ochre enamelled leaves, diamond studded pale blue forget-me-not flowers, and glowing cabochon rubies representing fruit or flowers. The sprig is tied at the end, with a pale blue ribbon, forming a neat bow. Verso, the locket is in plain, polished yellow gold. The locket opens on a hinge, to reveal oval compartments. The locket is so well made, that the join where the 2 sides of the locket meet is hardly seen. The locket is best opened by gently inserting a pin into the small opening at the side. The locket is in good condition, with few dings to the back of the locket. Wear and tear acquiescent with age.
This locket may have been given as a gift, presented by someone who was leaving and asking their spouse to ‘forget me not’. Bluebirds are seen to bring hope, love, and happiness. This piece is likely to have originally held a small painting or photograph.
