Important Charles Duron Renaissance Revival Brooch

About the Item

An Important Charles Duron Renaissance Revival brooch, the oval hardstone cameo in classical style, depicting a female in profile, to a black enamel decorated frame, flanked by two pearls within turquoise enamel bead clusters, the scroll designed boarder enamelled with translucent red, green and white, suspending three drop pearls, all mounted in yellow gold with gold brooch fitting, bearing French gold hallmarks, Paris circa 1860, bearing the hallmark of Charles Duron, measuring 5.6 x 4cm, gross weight 26.2 grams. Charles Duron was one of the leading goldsmiths working in Paris in the mid-19th century. He exhibited at the international exhibitions in 1855 & 1867 in Paris and in 1862 in London. He was patronized by the Rothschild family, the Marquess of Hertford and Alfred Morrison. Examples of his works are today preserved in the British Museum, the Musée d’Orsay and the Hermitage. his remarkable brooch made by Charles Duron is a wonderful example of mid-nineteenth century renaissance revival design. It comes from the collection of Bentley & Skinner, the London jewellers by appointment to both Her Majesty the Queen and His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales. The central cameo is delicate and detailed, depicting a lively neoclassical female silhouette. Surrounding the cameo is a brightly decorated enamel frame, featuring scroll designs and vivid colour. Three lustrous, gleaming pearls drop from the cameo. This spectacular and important piece is an excellent example of Charles Duron’s masterful craftsmanship.
