Small Antique Snake Eternity Brooch Pin - Gold with Hairwork
About the Item
Crafted of gold testing at a minimum of 9K - 10K and hairwork, the brooch pin features a sinuously designed snake in a sentimental eternity knot design. All original, the snake's head and tail are lovingly detailed. This could be a memorial/mourning piece or a sentimental piece made with a loved one's hair. It dates to the late Georgian to Victorian period.
The Snake measures approximately 7/8 of an inch x 1/2 an inch, not including the pin stem that extends beyond the curve of the snake (22 x 12 mm); the pinstem measures just under 1 and 1/8 of an inch (27.2 mm)
With tiny pink glass cabochon eyes (they look like garnets or rubies but test as glass) the snake has a really darling face, and nice cross hatched detailing giving the impression of scales.
The tail has matching cross hatched detail; between head and tail is finely worked brown human hair (under magnification I can see some golden strands, too) that create the eternity knot motif.
The reverse features the original "c" style clasp and curved pin stem. On my scale, it weighs 2.44 grams.
In overall very good condition, I see only slight wear to the hair and gold. The tip of the pin stem is slightly bent but works well and one eye is chipped, seen with magnification. In remarkably nice condition for its age – it's very wearable and would make a lovely addition to an antique jewelry collection.
