Antique Diamond Grouse Bird Capercaillie Brooch Pin in 14K Gold & Silver

About the Item

Incredibly sparkly and utterly charming, this antique diamond bird brooch (a Capercaillie or type of grouse, I believe) is a little stunner as it is, but is also the perfect size should you wish to convert it to a custom ring or small pendant charm. Crafted of solid 14k yellow gold and silver, the bar pin features a wonderfully detailed and dimensional, extremely sparkly Capercaillie bird (a forest dwelling grouse that looks much like a turkey) set with 38 old cut diamonds. Great attention to detail is shown in this piece, with both full cut brilliants & rose cut diamonds and lovely cushion cut diamonds along the top of his tail. His little face is set off with a gold beak and he’s shown perched on a golden branch with gold feet. His feathers are nearly as detailed on the back side as on the front, another indication of quality. The brooch retains its original trombone style clasp on the reverse. There are 6 sparkly diamonds set into the bird’s neck, 15 in the front wing and another 15 in his upright tail, plus one at each end of the branch he is perched on. The largest diamond, at approximately 2.5 mm in diameter, is set into the front of his wing, along with two other relatively large diamonds measuring approximately 1.8 mm and 1.4 mm in diameter. A diamond measuring approximately 1.5 mm is set at the base of the Capercaillie’s neck, with the rest of the diamonds measuring a little under 1 mm to a little over 1 mm in diameter. Very good quality diamonds with nice color and clarity - these are much nicer than what is often found in pieces of this period. The brilliants were given open backed settings (all the way through the back wing, even), while the rose cuts are in the traditional closed back settings. It’s also especially nice to see full cut diamonds, in addition to the rose cuts, as often one sees only very rustic rose cuts in these old animal pieces. It’s clear to see that the diamonds for this bird were chosen carefully, with the tail stones extremely well matched. Rose cuts are notoriously challenging to calculate by measurement, but I will estimate the total carat weight in this piece to be approximately half a carat, or so. Mr. Capercaillie on his branch measures approximately 14.5 x 12.2 mm (a little over 9/16 of an inch x a little over 1/2 an inch), with the total length of the bar pin/brooch measuring approximately 51.2 mm or a little over 2 inches. A small mark of “585” (the European mark) is on the back of the bar, indicating 14k gold. The trombone clasp is rather stiff to operate, and may benefit from adjustment by a jeweler, but does work. As a brooch, the total weight of the piece is 4.25 grams on my scale. There is lovely old patina to the silver which could be polished up if you prefer. If you are interested in a custom conversion to a ring or charm pendant, please message me. I would be happy to assist you in creating something extra special.
