A Victorian Natural Pearl Ruby And Diamond Bug Brooch

About the Item

A Victorian natural pearl ruby and diamond bug brooch, the body with a baroque pearl, the legs embellished with emeralds and the wings with faceted rubies and old-cut diamonds, the head with old-cut diamonds and cabochon-cut ruby eyes, the diamonds estimated to weigh a total of 1.7 carats, accompanied by GCS Report stating the rubies to be Burmese with no indications of heating and the pearl to be natural of saltwater origin, all mounted in yellow gold with gold brooch fitting, circa 1870, measuring approximately 3.5 x 2.3cm, gross weight 12.6 grams. This antique brooch is in very good condition for its age. Unmarked, tested as 18ct gold with 9ct gold pin. This magnificent Victorian bug brooch comes from the collection of Bentley & Skinner, the London jewellers by appointment to both Her Majesty the Queen and His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales. During the second half of the nineteenth century, jewellery in the form of insects became very popular, and this is a stunning example of such jewellery. The body of this insect is made up of a single, luminous baroque pearl. The wings are studded with bright and vibrant rubies and diamonds, and the front legs are set with emeralds. The delicate detail of the insect is wonderful and charming, and this glittering and ornate little brooch would be a stunning and eye-catching addition to a jacket lapel. Should you choose to make this purchase we would be delighted to send it to you in a Bentley & Skinner handmade leather case packed in a gift-wrapped Bentley & Skinner black and gold presentation box. Shortly afterwards we will send you on a valuation for insurance purposes for your reference and safekeeping.
